Formal Definition

Death prior to complete expulsion or extraction from the mother of a foetus, irrespective of the duration of pregnancy. Early foetal death (before 22 completed weeks of gestation) is known as miscarriage, whereas late foetal death (after 22 completed weeks of gestation) is known as stillbirth.
